Folk Painting in Chhattisgarh – A Study

Abstract

 India's arts, handicrafts and folk paintings have been a powerful medium to express its cultural and traditional effectiveness since the past. India's 29 states and 7 federal states have their own special cultural and traditional identity, which is visible in different forms of art prevalent there. The development of art in human civilization took place in three forms  Architecture, sculpture and painting. Chhattisgarh has a rich tradition of folk painting since ancient times. In Chhattisgarh, in various festivals, men and women of rural and urban areas carve folk paintings in their homes and courtyards. Most of the decoration of houses in Chhattisgarh is done by women and they are unable to explain any specific motive behind these decorations.  The beauty of the walls seems to be their purpose. The evidence of folk painting in Chhattisgarh is prehistoric in Raigad and Surguja districts.
