Abstract

In ancient times, women had a paramount position in the society and were considered a symbol of happiness, prosperity, peace, splendor and knowledge. The condition of women worsened during the Dharmasastra period as Vedic rules were abandoned and women were denied property rights. There was no significant change in the status of women even during the British period. During this period some efforts were made by the Indian social reformers to improve the status of women. After the attainment of independence, a period of revolutionary change has started in the Indian society. The spread of legal system, political ideals and western education has brought about changes in social and cultural values in the society. Women's education, economic independence, social security and social reforms etc. have been given prominence in the five year plans. Discrimination, physical abuse, mental harassment and many other types of rights are still being violated against women at work places. Therefore, there is a great need to improve the condition of women.
