Role of Self-Help Groups in Empowerment of Women

Abstract

Self help group is a group formed by the community women which has specific number
of members like 15-20. In such a groups the poorest women would come together for
emergency, disaster, social reasons, economic, support to each other case of conversation,
social interaction and economic interactions. Empowerment is a process of awareness
and capacity building, leading to greater, decision making power and control and trans
formative action. Women become empowered through collective reflection and decision
making enable them to become agency of social change. The core element of empowerment has been defined as agency, awareness of gendered power structure, self esteem and
self confidence. Keeping in the view of above facts the present Study has been attempted
to study, Role of Self-help Groups in Empowerment of Women. Study only focused on study
to develop collective decision making among women, to create groups feeling among women
and to sensitize women of target area for the need of self help groups and its relevance in
their empowerment process. The present paper attempts to evaluate the Role of Self-help
Groups in Empowerment of women. The paper is based on secondary data.
