Abstract

During the British rule, English education was spread throughout the whole of India; it also had an impact on the education system of Chhattisgarh. Western-style educational institutions were established all over the country and in Chhattisgarh. The spread of English education led to the amalgamation of Indian culture and European culture. Indians began to feel the shortcomings of their culture and social evils and superstitions were clearly visible to them. As a result, the era of social and religious reforms started. The contribution of Chhattisgarh College Raipur and S.B.R. College Bilaspur is particularly noteworthy in Higher Education. Political and social progress also came in Chhattisgarh due to English education. Women's education was also encouraged during this period and works were started for the upliftment and progress of women.  During the reign of Lord Ripon, the Hunter Commission also suggested to encourage women's education in particular. Many girls schools were established even on individual grants. But in the rural areas, there was no adequate system of education for the girls.
